Panel discussion: "Are female composers still unfairly overlooked?"

Aarebrotforelesningen - logo

When

Join us for an engaging panel discussion on gender balance and visibility in classical music. The conversation will be held in Norwegian.

Ahead of the Aarebrot Lecture, we invite you to Teglverket at Kvarteret on January 18 at 2:00 PM, where a diverse panel will explore the pressing question: Are female composers still unfairly overlooked?

The conversation is inspired by pianist Sara Aimee Smiseth’s remarks on this year’s Chamber Music Festival and highlights the current state of gender equality in the music field. Through an engaging discussion, the panel will address questions such as:

- Do we still need to focus on female composers, or has the debate run its course?
-Can such discussions feel exhausting or provocative for artists and audiences?
- Is it relevant to single out "female" composers as a separate category in today’s music world?

Panel participants:

- Sara Aimee Smiseth
– Classical pianist and communicator
- Anna Berg – Composer
- Christian Grøvlen – Director of the Composer Homes
- Dr. Karina Valnumsen Hansen – PhD in Musicology
- Peter Meanwell – Artistic Director of Borealis

Program:
The event lasts 1.5 hours and will feature musical performances that set the tone and enhance the discussion's theme. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on diversity and gender balance in the world of music – and perhaps challenge your own perspectives.

Join us for an inspiring start to the lead-up to Sunday’s Aarebrot Lecture – we look forward to seeing you!
