Ambrosia Tønnesen was a trailblazer as Norway's first female sculptor. She broke barriers, gained recognition, and built an extraordinary career. What motivated her to pursue art, and how did she succeed at a time when few women had a place in art history? These are the questions Jorunn Veiteberg delves into in her captivating lecture about Tønnesen's inspiring life and artistic legacy. The conversation will be conducted in Norwegian.

Jorunn Veiteberg holds a PhD in art history and is the curator of the exhibition Ambrosia Tønnesen: Sculpture. With extensive experience as a leader, curator, educator, and communicator across art institutions, media, and academia, she is a renowned voice in the field. Veiteberg has authored approximately 30 books, including the biography Ambrosia Tønnesen: "Sculptor of the Fine" (2009).

The exhibition offers an in-depth look at Tønnesen's artistry, showcasing over 60 works in plaster, bronze, and marble. In Bergen alone, 40 of her creations grace the cityscape, including the Ole Bull statue at Den Nationale Scene, the monumental J.C. Dahl statue on the façade of Permanenten, and the bust of Amalie Skram at Bergen Public Library. The exhibition is the result of a long-term effort to locate her works, with several being displayed for the first time since the artist's lifetime.

In 2025, Tønnesen will be honored with a monument in Bergen’s cityscape as part of the municipality’s project, "Women on Pedestals."
