The 2024 commissioned work for Kode is a three-part composition by Gundersen, written for vocalist Tora Augestad and the BIT20 Ensemble. The instrumentation includes violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, piano, and female voice.

Each of the three movements focuses on different instrumental combinations drawn from the ensemble, coming together to form a cohesive whole and a complete cycle.

In this work, Gundersen has explored material from Ole Bull’s letter collection, as well as texts by Norwegian poets from Bull’s era. This has inspired a composition that delves into the chamber music format and the classical lied tradition.

The new work will be performed in Troldsalen.

More about Andreas Gundersen

Pianist and composer Andreas Gundersen (b. 1993) is Kode’s composer-in-residence for 2024.

After completing his studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH), Andreas Gundersen moved from Oslo back to Deanu/Tana, where he lives and works as a composer and performer. From there, he has established new collaborations with artists, performers, and composers in the north, particularly in Sápmi.

In 2023, he assumed the role of Artistic Advisor for Sámi and Kven music at the Arctic Philharmonic..

As a composer, Gundersen began writing music while taking lessons from composer Rune Rebne at Toneheim Folk High School. He later apprenticed with Jon Øivind Ness, studied composition with Kjell Habbestad and Bente Leiknes Thorsen at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH), and pursued a bachelor's degree in composition at NMH under the guidance of Asbjørn Schaathun.

Gundersen is a highly active composer who also remains engaged as a performer. In addition to his work as a classical pianist, he is closely involved with pop music, working as both a producer and songwriter. In recent years, his focus has been on spectral and microtonal music. He describes his style as French- and American-inspired, combined with sophisticated harmonics.
