Chaminade: The Queen of the salon
Concert in the Ambrosia Tønnesen exhibition
Salon art is a distinct concept in art history, and salon music is one of the most expansive genres in classical music.
Some of history's greatest—and lesser-known—composers have written salon music. But what exactly is this genre, which today is so often looked down upon?
Christian Grøvlen, Director of the Composer Homes at Kode and a pianist, explores the music of Cécile Chaminade.
Cécile Chaminade was a leading French pianist and composer in the salons of the late 1800s. She achieved commercial success through the publication and later recordings of her music, and Chaminade Societies were established in several countries as late as the 1940s. After her death, however, her music largely disappeared from the repertoire, dismissed as mere “salon music.” But what does that really mean, and what is this music truly like? Join us in the Tønnesen Exhibition to experience it firsthand.
The concert has been made possible through the generous support of the H. Westfal-Larsen and wife Anna Westfal-Larsen charitable trust.
